Boise – “State of Mind – A Series on Children’s Mental Health Issues” debuts April 17th on Boise State Radio.  The three-minute feature will be heard on the third and fourth Monday of each month at 6:30 and 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on NPR News 91.

“State of Mind” begins with the story of a young teenage boy who struggles with mental illness. Each feature builds on the previous one, offering a complete picture of children’s mental health concerns, solutions and a message of hope.

More than 17-thousand children in Idaho have a serious emotional disturbance (SED). However, less than half of those children receive the help they need. These children not only face mental issues they also must deal and fight stigmas on a daily basis. This month, Boise State Radio in collaboration with Idaho System of Care bring you a new six months series on children’s mental health issues in Idaho.

The series covers signs and symptoms of mental health issues including depression, fighting stigmas, suicide prevention and services available to parents and children. You can hear features on the third and fourth Monday’s every month. If you miss a segment, you can visit Boise State Radio’s website (http://radio.boisestate.edu) to hear the latest installment as well as find links to useful resources.

State of Mind is reported and produced by Sadie Babits.   Babits has reported on global issues, such as the Kenya water crises where she was a Pew International Journalism Fellow.  She has produced extensively for National Public Radio and other national public radio programs.  She is the Acting News Director for Boise State Radio.

The program is funded by Idaho System of Care.
